Landscape

The Dorset research area is a collection of lake basins that includes a selection of headwater streams and lake outflows. The study site is relatively flat, located on the southern limit of the Precambrian shield. The metamorphic silicate bedrock is covered with a thin basal till, interrupted by rock ridges. The basins are primarily forested with some rural cottage development throughout. The forests are mixedwood composed of white pine, hemlock, balsam fir, maple, birch and white cedar. Most larger peak flows occur in the fall and spring due to snowmelt and rain events. Periods of zero flow are common in most streams during the summer months.
