Landscape

The ELA research sites are located near the southwest edge of the Precambrian Shield. The area is characterized by exposed outcrops of granite bedrock that is strongly sheared and faulted. Soils are sandy loam with variable components of gravel and cobbles. The overburden is thin to non-existent. The small watersheds are dominated by lakes, which strongly influence runoff in the area. The forest is predominately jack pine, with black spruce, poplar and white birch in the uplands.
