The study site is located within the Fundy Model Forest and includes the adjacent watersheds of Holmes and Hayward Brooks. The third order watersheds flow through relatively flat rolling terrain. Soils are generally coarse sandy loams, varying from loamy sand to fine loams depending on the basin. Soil depths range from 30 to 100 cm overtop of till blanket surficial materials. Sedimentary rocks make up the dominant bedrock type. The forest type is mixedwood composed of: red spruce, red maple, balsam fir, trembling aspen, white pine and white birch.
