Landscape

The study site is located within the Montmorency Experimental Research Forest approximately 80 km N of Quebec City. The watershed is part of the Laurentian Uplands of the Canadian Shield. The forest is predominately balsam fir (75%) with a mix of white spruce, white birch and black spruce making up the remaining quarter. Soils are predominately orthic ferro-humic podzols overtop of basil till that ranges from nothing on the summits to 18m deep in the valleys. The hydrograph is snowmelt dominated.

Two forest hydrology experiments were conducted at the site. The first occurred in the late sixties and the second in the mid-eighties. The treatment and control watersheds were reversed to conduct the latter experiment.
